Hamble River SC vs Hill Head SC

Published 19:00 on 12 Jul 2014
This annual event between the young Pico sailors at Hill Head SC and Hamble River SC was first started with the encouragement of the RYA On Board programme.
This year two teams of sailors from HRSC (single and double handers) visited Hill Head on 14th June, and using the Hill Head dinghies had a series of 5 races each. The wind started off as a light northerly, which was challenging, but then built to a good steady breeze and provided some great racing, both competitive and fun. So much so that the parent helpers thought that we should have a sail as well, so after the cadet racing we jumped in the Pico’s and took on the Hill Head parents and instructors. Suffice to say that the wind proved too much for some of the adults, and some took up swimming as an extra activity for the day, much to the amusement of the children, who had all stayed upright!
When we all dried out, and the results were reviewed, HRSC were the winners in the single and double handers, as well as the adult racing.
On 13th July, the Hill Head sailors came to HRSC for the return match, using our Pico’s. This was the day after the Hamble Games, in which several of our sailors and parents had competed. Wind again started off light, so our Race Officer decided to take the sailors down towards the Warsash Maritime Academy where there was a steady breeze. The double handers went first, using the jibs. After 4 races, we swapped crews on the water, took down the jibs and the single handers got in 3 races before the tide and wind prompted the end of the event.
Back at the club house, burgers and chips were cooking, and we all enjoyed the view from the decking in the sunshine. Results were clearly affected by the Hamble Games, as HRSC won the double handers, but the single handers were tied on 18 points. However taking both events into account, HRSC were declared the winners and were presented with the On Board Trophy.
Overall a great event, providing some friendly inter-club rivalry, and an opportunity for the children from both clubs to sail in unfamiliar waters. Thanks as always to the organisers from both clubs and the parent helpers who make it all happen.
