Uncle Bobs 3rd September
This is the annual cadet regatta for HRSC members only, at the end of the summer holidays, hence the early notice. There are three separate groups, Uncle Bobs in the Pico's, Cousin Bobs in racing Oppies, and Baby Bobs in the club poly oppies or ploppies.
The Uncle Bobs event has a long history, as Peggy Dorothy says below:
"Uncle Bob Williams was one of the founders of the club. The cup in his name has many famous club names on the trophy.I actually won the trophy and my name as Peggy Lewis is on it and I am very proud. In those days, members very kindly lent boats and crewed for the cadets, that year it was in GP Fourteens. We raced from the club line down as far as Bald Head and Chilling and then finished off the club line.It was raced as we do today in heats with a final.I remember it was blowing and I had never sailed that type of boat so it was a bit daunting and the final had two laps which was a long way.
When I resurrected the cadets I wanted to resurrect the tradition. The cup was lost and we had a duplicate made and I traced back as many winners as possible.Luckily the original turned up in someone's loft. The cadets as today had to be under 18 on the day of the race.
The kids really enjoyed racing for it and Eddie Gillett, who was one if not the first winner, came along with his neighbour Liz Jowett to present the cup and talk to the cadets.Eddie to my horror said that in his day they did not wear life jackets!Eddie was in his late 80's by then, and has since passed away.
Because we had so many young cadets, as today, a group of older cadets asked me if we could have another trophy so the younger ones could have a race day so the Baby Bobs was born, to be sailed in oppies.
After another year again the cadets asked for another middle of the road trophy as we had 30 plus older kids wanting to race and the Cousin Bob was born.
Apparently Uncle Bob Williams is buried at Hamble church, but some of the cadets looked for his grave but could not find it.
I hope you all have a good days racing and as always with the cadets have fun."
