Winter training with the Topper JETS Squad

Published 11:20 on 28 Feb 2024

This year Hamble River Sailing Club once again took part in winter training with the Topper JETS Squad, with 7 HRSC sailors being selected for squad. .

February 10th/11th was Hamble's turn to host.A fabulous weekend at the club was had by all as the squad spent two sunny days on the water with head coach Vicky, developing their sailing ahead of the upcoming southern traveller series.

Here's what Phileas and Alixe-Constance Rousselle have said about their experience being on the JETs squad:

''JETS consists of 6 weekends of training at different clubs around the South with coaches and other Topper sailors, which is a great way for us to be more engaged with activities.

We train and make ourselves better sailors and improve our racing skills. Usually, the plan is to have two sessions on the water everyday with briefings to start and end the day and a land session looking at racing rules, boat preparation and how to get the best out of it and how to perform better on the water.

On the water, we practised mark rounding, starts, hovering, racing, tacking, gybing, how to act with tide the best way possible and sailing in different conditions every time, while it being in a fun game manner.

It is also great fun as Team Hamble is making new friend sailors from other clubs from the Southern Area. We all make new friends every JETS weekend even though some of us are not available all the time.

All this winter training will help us to participate in the Travellers Southern Area races and few of us might venture on the National circuit and to the Nationals in August, which we will gratefully thank our coaches for leading us the way!!!''
