HRSC Youth Sailing Program 2019

2019 is the club’s centenary year and we have lots of club activities planned along with an update of our Youth Sailing Program, designed to cater for all age groups of all abilities.

Our program is a full and varied and aims to cater for a wide range of sailing needs so we hope you will find lots to suit your family. However some of the events will require support from participants on the day – eg Safety Boats, Race Officer, Bar, etc. We are a members club, run by its members, for its members – or in our case, for our children. I look forward to making 2019 a huge success with you, your children and the Club – please do let me know what and how and where you are able to support – your Club needs you!

Some events are free to members whilst others will incur a small charge to cover the cost of Instructors – any costs are shown and you can book online….and there will be minimum numbers to allow the session to run.

Of course we are always open to new ideas so if there is anything you can think of that you would like to see happening for our Youth members this year, please let me know.

Now let’s see what is planned for the 2019 season……….

Cadet Sessions
We will continue with our Cadet Sessions, focusing on ‘time on the water’ and fun. These sessions have proved to be great introductions for younger members to get on the water and for the more experienced to have fun with their friends. We are also planning a new Adventure Group (Amazons) for those who want to work on new skills, day sailing, seamanship skills, spinnakers and two handed sailing.

Cadets is also a great opportunity for new members to join in with these sessions and those who have recently completed RYA courses at the school and want to develop their sailing experience and opportunities on the water.

We will also organise sailaways – as I know that our cadets enjoy sailing to different destinations. Our sailaways will be both local, and further afield to Ashlet or Calshot. We will need support from parents as always and particularly those with ribs at their disposal.

An email will be sent out on a Sunday evening, before the following Saturday session, for you to register your details by 5pm on Wednesday so we can successfully plan the session.

Rachel and I always appreciate the support and assistance from you all when running the sessions and covering during holiday and absences, so please let me know if you are interested in being Team Leaders for any of the following:

White – Beginners (Peanuts)
Red – RYA Level 1/2 (Junior Cadets)
Yellow- RYA Level 3 (Cadets)
Green – RYA Level 3/4 Race Group
Blue – RYA Level 4+ Adventure Group (Amazons)

Sunday Coaching

Following the success of our Sunday Coaching in 2018, we are continuing this in 2019.
The sessions are split in to two groups;
1) For those that wish to develop their sailing skills and build on any RYA training.
2) For those that wish to develop their racing skills. The racing sessions will be developed around the individual sailors that attend the sessions, and will involve numerous training exercise and activities to learn, develop, and fine tune skills. (Sailors need to be RYA level 3 or above)
The sessions are not run as formal training, but we will provide on the water coaching to those that would like it to help them improve at their rate. And of course there will be supervision and safety boat cover from a close by instructor.

These sessions will be run by a team of instructors from 9:30am to 12:30 am and will cost £15 per session. They will need to be booked via the Club Website by the Monday of the previous week.

NB. Each session can be booked individually, so you can book as few or as many sessions as suit you, however each session will require a minimum of 7 participants to ensure the sessions can take place. Spaces are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

The Club run RYA courses throughout the holidays and half terms. These include RYA Start Sailing 1, 2, 3, 4, Improvers and Racing, etc. Also a PB1 course is available for children (aged 8+) who want to learn the basics of driving a rib safely under adult supervision. If you are interested, please contact the office for details and costs.

Adult Training
We require more parents to take a more active role in supporting our Youth Sessions. To help parents, we will be looking to run Assistant Instructor (AI) courses, which will enable them to gain useful skills in teaching and running small sessions. Our first AI Course is xxxxxx. This is an area which will allow our sessions to run more effectively and share the responsibility of running small groups. We will also be able to run PB2 and Safety Boat courses. Check the HRSC Website for details.

There will also be opportunities for parents to have training on running the bar and helping in the kitchen – again, please let us know if you are interested in adding these to your skill set!!
