HRSC Youth Sailing
Our youth sailing section is a thriving and ever-growing section at HRSC. We run regular parent-led sessions with the aim of providing a safe and fun environment for toddlers through to teenagers to come along and enjoy being on the water. Our program is full and varied and aims to cater for a wide range of sailing needs, so we hope you will find lots to suit your family.
The emphasis throughout is for kids to have fun on the water, engage with other children and make friends, as well as learn to sail and continue to improve their skills on the beautiful hamble river.
HRSC Youth Sailing Pathway
During sessions, the children split into smaller groups, based off ability and the boat they sail. The groups are:
Peanuts (white) – Non-sailors going out sailing with parents.
Junior cadets (red) – RYA 1 or 2
Cadets (yellow) – RYA 3
Race cadets (green) – Split into 3 squads, Optimist, Topper and Feva – RYA 3 + Start Racing.
Voyager cadets (blue) – RYA stage 4 +
Advanced cadets – 12+ looking to become Assistant instructors and volunteer at the club over the summer.
Through the year children have the opportunity to move groups as they attend RYA courses at our training school.
Each group is led by a number of parents, who run the session; however the support of all parents is needed to run effectively out on the water, to make the sessions fun, safe and leave you wanting to come back.
Youth sailing Sessions
Our youth sailing sessions run all year round, just make sure you are suitably dressed and come join the fun!
Early Season Youth Sailing Sessions
These sessions are scheduled once a month from January to April, they are primarily aimed at the Race Cadets but also open to the Voyager and Advanced cadets, who would like to get in some early season sailing and training prior to competing in the Junior Warming Pan.
Saturday Youth Sailing sessions April to September
These twice a month sessions run over the high tide of a Saturday, which means session times can change. These sessions are open to all youth sailors from Peanuts through to the advanced cadets.
During the session sailors are split into their groups for on the water activity, and then everyone can come back to the club house after sailing for socialising.
Friday Youth Sailing session April to September
Alternate to the Saturday sessions. The Friday sessions provide our stage 3 sailors and higher, the opportunity to get out on the water on a weekly basis, to practice their skills and have fun. The race cadets also have the opportunity to take part in regular racing against Warsash SC and Royal Southern during these sessions.
Winter Youth Sailing Sessions
6 sessions that will start at the end of October and carry on into December. These sessions are open to the Race cadets, Voyager and Advanced cadets. If interest is high the Cadets may also be invited along. The focus of these sessions will depend upon the groups and will focus on developing skills learnt over the summer.
An email will be sent out to all registered youth members over the weekend before the session, to register. If you dont think you are receiving emails, please contact email@example.com
Saturday Youth sessions are a great opportunity for new members to join in, and for those who have recently completed RYA courses at the school and want to develop their sailing experience and opportunities on the water. Non-members are welcome to attend 2 Saturday sessions before deciding if they would like to join the club.
We look to provide regular racing, for our youth sailors that are interested in developing their racing skills. Events throughout the year include; the Junior Warming Pan, Summer Regatta, Class open events and Uncle Bobs Regatta (suitable for even the newest sailors).
Our Optimist, Topper and Feva sailors are also encouraged to attend local events and represent HRSC. For our more competitive sailors there is the option to attend regional, national, and international regattas along with access for the successful to join RYA squads.
