Winter Dinghy Sailing

Hamble River SC Winter dinghy racing

Hamble River’s Winter dinghy racing programme kicked off on Saturday 1st December with four short races held in a light breeze and beautifully sunny conditions. This is the first time for many years the club has run handicap dinghy racing during the winter and it was great to see nine boats including Optimists, Picos, Laser Radials, Fevas and Fireflys on the startline. Peter Slimming and Audrey Kinght in Peter’s Firefly came out on top in every race with two club cadets, Alex Green in his Laser Radial, and William Harrison in his Optimist, currently occupying second and third overall in the series.

With 25 Foxers on the Warsash side of the river and 9 other dinghies racing on the other the combined events were great advertising for HRSC. It was great to see many helpful volunteers running the racing and the safety boats. The competitors would also like to thank Sylvie Duff for providing some wonderfully warming soup and cake in the club after racing.

The next race day will take place on Saturday 15th December. First start will be at 1300. The series will continue after New Year with racing every two weeks on high tide Saturday until the Hamble Warming Pan on 16/17 March. It would be great to see more boats on the startline. Please contact series organisers Will Yonge or Barney Smith if you’d like to join in.

The series is open to boats with handicap numbers between an Optimist and a Laser Radial but if you have a faster boat please contact Barney and Will and we’ll try and work out a way of fitting you in.
