Baby Bobs venture out of the River

Published 20:06 on 4 Sep 2012

Saturday 1st September brought a change to the wettest summer in 100 years with a dry calm day, with only 5-6 knots forecast and less in the sheltered river; the decision was taken to hold the racing in Southampton Water near to Cat Head.

A briefing was held in the Club House to explain the basics of racing and the course to be sailed. A best of 3 regatta would decide the under 11 club champion. The future Ben Ainslie’s then took to the water and like a Swan with her cygnets the RIB towed the Oppies out of the river to the race area.

The first race was in perfect conditions for the young members, flat water and just enough breeze to get the boats moving. Alex Hamel was the first to the windward mark and held her lead to take the opening race.

With everyone using club boats, to rule out any disadvantage it have been agreed at the briefing that the top placed sailors would swap boats with those finishing lower down the order. Using the rib as a mini pontoon the boats swapping took place with surprising ease and the 2nd race was quickly underway.

With the wind dropping the 2nd race was a more tactical with those finding the breeze on the outside and staying in clear air taking advantage. William did especially well moving up from 7th in the first race to 2nd but it was Eleanor who took the victory.

As the 2nd race finished the wind died completely and a shortened regatta was on the cards, then and eagle eye spotted the sea breeze filling in and the course was reset to accommodate the 150 degree shift. With boats swapped again, the sailors quickly grasped that everything was now in a different direction and the final race was underway. Indigo stayed in clear air avoiding the pack ahead to come through and be first to the 1st mark, Felix was just behind and getting closer down the reach to the turn and leeward mark, but Indigo pulled way on the short beat to the finish and claim top spot in the final race.

Racing over, masts were dropped for the tow back to the river and the end of a great days racing, well done to all that took part and also those helping out with the race committee and mark laying.
