Thursday 24th February: 7pm "Coincidences in Sailing"

Join our guest speaker John Best at HRSC on Thursday 24th February. Some members may know John as previous Rear Commodore Sailing at the RAFYC, others may remember him from the HRSC Centenary Sail Past in 2019, when he and his rib THOR shepherded boats in the assembly area by Hamble River No 1 pile. John was instrumental in arranging the logistics of the Sail Past.

John was brought up on the East Coast, where he learnt to sail in a Cadet dinghy on the River Colne. He came to Southampton University in the late '60s and his dinghy sailing career progressed through a GP14, Hornets, Fireballs, 505s and Flying Dutchmen.

This talk is about "coincidences that changed my sailing career from being a reasonably good weekend dinghy sailor to getting involved in all manner of big time sailboat racing at an International level - often, to my great surprise!"

John is a great raconteur; his talk will be entertaining and reminiscent of a past era of international keel boat racing, when amateur skippers and crew would often turn up late to work on a Monday, where they would fall asleep at their desks, having just returned from a 200+ mile offshore race.

The Club and bar will be open from 6.30pm. A club supper will be available at about 8.15pm, after John's talk. Please pre-book https://www.hrsc.org.uk/booking/type/social
