Presentation: The Soldier who came back by Steve Foster Part 1 - Escape attempt in Second World War': 13th January 2022

From L-R: Past Commodore Ken Munro, Presenter Steve Foster and Commodore Steph Merry

A congenial group of about 20 members gathered at the Club House last Thursday evening. They had come to listen to a moving presentation by Steve Foster, Author and Historian, about his father Fred. Interned in Northern Poland in 1940, at the Nazi war camp Stalag XX-A, Fred (the son of a bricklayer, who had left school at 14) struck up an unlikely friendship with Antony Coulthard, the privately educated son of wealthy parents with a degree in modern languages from Oxford. This led to one of the most remarkable and audacious wartime escape stories ever told, which held the HRSC audience spellbound.

Trisha kept the bar open from half an hour before the presentation until the last contented stragglers left the Club, just before 10 pm. Cat served everyone a tasty meal of baked gammon, served with potatoes, vegetables and gravy, which was cooked and delivered to the Club by Pete and Mary Fry.

Congenial atmosphere after the presentation and meal at HRSC.

Part 2 of the presentation tells the story of how Steve searched for the grave of Anthony Coulthard, who had sadly died during the Nazi death march of 1945. Why not join us next Thursday (20th January) to hear what happened?
