HRSC A2 Race Report 17th May 2017

HRSC A2 Race Report

"Wet wet wet " was the only way to describe Wednesday, the second day of the A Series at Hamble River SC. During the day there had been NO WIND, but the forecast was for a light northerly to fill in in the evening and the rain to ease. I was a little surprised therefore when the club secretary phoned at 2pm to ask if racing was to be cancelled. I don't dissolve and I know rain makes my hair look dreadful, but aren't we sailors supposed to be rufty tufty people? Do we cancel racing for rain? Not at Hamble River we don't.

By 5pm the torrential rain had eased to a steady downpour and Calshot spit showed a steady 6 knots, so the committee boat set off and laid a short course between Hamble Point and Coronation. Unfortunately the 6 knots stayed at Calshot and the wind was light. But 11 boats had turned up to race and so race they did.

It was good to welcome a new competitor to class 1, the etchells, Waywoh, but unfortunately none of his mates joined him, so he got a first place on his first outing. There was tight racing in the Impala fleet as usual with Imptish getting the best start and the best finish. The brownie points go to Polly though who kindly towed an X boat out to the start, and towed a different one home after the finish.

If this had been a National Championship we probably wouldn't have raced in the light winds, but it wasn't so we did. And a very good supper was had by all afterwards.
